ALL GAMERS - ALL GAMES - how do we get this across more clearly?
« on: December 03, 2007, 01:17:48 pm »
I've been thinking 'make oklahoma a place for gamers' -is too confusing for a tagline - that we need something more straight forwards?

I've been thinking about how to make it CLEAR we cover all gamers and their events in the Oklahoma area.

I've been thinking this - because for the entire run of 07, we have constantly had confusion about the site's coverage.

(At first - people thought all halo, no rpg / card games)

So - what can we do to improve this?

I've been planning on making a "All gamers, All games" graphic for the front page, replacing the gamer galleries spot, and trying to make it clear there.

So first - how to 'make it clear' - to me it's first catagorizing all 'games' 'gamers play' - and labelling out examples, for now I've got 4 categories:

Card / Board Games - (bad combination there or?)
yugioh, axis and allies, warhammer, etc

Pen and Paper / Roleplaying Games - (is there a better way to sum that up?)
DnD, Vampire, etc

PC and Console Games -
Halo, Super Smash Bros, Madden, Quake, etc

Arcade Games -
Soul Calibur, Initial D, etc

(did I miss any CATEGORIES of games or GOOD GAMES TO ADD here?)

And maybe have a catchall DONT SEE YOUR GAME?  GREAT - ADD IT TO OUR FORUMS AND FIND OTHERS THAT PLAY TOO!

And going that route.  Maybe if I specifically mention one of EVERYTHING we'll be good.  I've thought about animating it so it catches attention - maybe starting out with an outline of Oklahoma and a bit of the surrounding states, etc.  Dunno.  Thoughts?

I'm with dark on this one, not really sure how that could be misconstrued as something else. But gamers aren't the brightest bulbs in the box ALL the time either. I can't really say for sure since I'm not an outsider looking in so to speak. So I can't really be impartial, but what your saying makes since so your good.

Why not have "Okgamers, so easy a gave man can do it."

But seriously, what about having 2 slogons.  Is that against the rules?

Personally Here's how I'd organize the games into categories...

Table-Top Games/Miniatures War Games
D&D, Vampire:The Masquerade, Inquisitor, Warhammer 40000, WarMachine, Babylon5: A Call to Arms

CCG (Collector Carg Games)
yu-gi-oh, PokeMon, Magic: the Gathering, Poker

Live Action Role Playing Games
Dingeons and Dragons, Vampire: the Requium, Werewolf, Legend of the 5 rings

PC Games -
Starcraft, world of Warcraft, EQ, Call of Duty 4, Need for Speed

Console Games -
PS2, X-Box 360, X-box, Wii, PS3, DS, PSP

Arcade Games -
Soul Calibur, Initial D, Time Crisis 3, DDR

what do you all think?

No, Just categories....

As for a tagline, I'll see what I can come up with. It will be a bit difficult to come up with a one liner that will make Everyone aware of all that this sie encomapsses while being witty, and an attention grabber at the same time.  So, give me a bit of time and I'll see what I can come up with.

0_0 We aren't??? ._.

:P

Seriously, I think that the graphics are fine. I think if you're going to do anything like that, you should split the forum that way. Under the local gamer board, you should split it into sub boards for the Tabletop, PC & Console, Card, etc. Then, people can browse by type and not just the whole thing plopped down in one place. Then, people who play tabletop won't think that they're alone in this community because the only topics about it are hidden on page 8 or something like that.

Hmm.  I'm against splitting up the events section - but for the local players...  That might be a really good idea.  Leave it to Cools to come up with the gold stuff.

Thoughts?

(Also - we plan on really dumbing down what we have on the front page with graphics, and making it REALLY easy to understand.)

ALSO - BRAINSTORM WITH ME FOR A SEC - different combinations for cats - and also icons for the big categories

Table-Top Games/Miniatures War Games
D&D, Vampire:The Masquerade, Inquisitor, Warhammer 40000, WarMachine, Babylon5: A Call to Arms

CCG (Collector Carg Games)
yu-gi-oh, PokeMon, Magic: the Gathering, Poker

-- Could those not all fall under Table top?  Or are CCG players insulted by that?

Live Action Role Playing Games
Dingeons and Dragons, Vampire: the Requium, Werewolf, Legend of the 5 rings

-- Role playing games or pen and paper - or is PnP a bad impression of LARPing / etc?

PC Games -
Starcraft, world of Warcraft, EQ, Call of Duty 4, Need for Speed

Console Games -
PS2, X-Box 360, X-box, Wii, PS3, DS, PSP

Arcade Games -
Soul Calibur, Initial D, Time Crisis 3, DDR

-- Usually this is broken up Computer / Console / AC.   I was thinking - digital? Electronic?

-----------

Icons - we could do a ball style joystick on a old atari style controller to cover 'digital' - as all 3 can yea.

pen and pad for pen and paper / dnd / larping?  (goes back to the whole larping falling into pnp or not)

A board with several types of cards, a figure, and various peices?

Of course, that's simplifying things down to 3 categories...  And would those cat's play nicely together as well.
(AC and console don't always get along, what about LARP vs DnD vs?)

Help.

I think the forum will need to updated with separate forums for each game and type and then in those genres add the different forums for the individual games. Its prolly a really big job but that should really get the point across.

For Example: MLG Forums- they have the main for and then like a bazzillion others for separate games, competition, scrims, school, sports, etc...

But the problem is that they only play certain games in MLG. If you separate it by game (or game genre- like FPS and RPG), it will be too broken down. Just doing it by system and type (like Cards or Tabletop) would be easy to do (or I assume :P) yet break it down to make it not so cluttered. I mean, who can find that pesky doa4 topic if it's not on one of the first few pages? ;)

My example - PMS forums. Here's a link too. ^^
Main Page - http://www.pmsclan.com/forums/index.php
Page with the breakdown - http://www.pmsclan.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=666

Their forums, in my opinion, are VERY cluttered, but the breakdown idea is good.
