Spamming / bots on the site - What to do when you see it
« on: November 13, 2008, 02:33:50 am »

Long story short - I've been told by Furyswrath that Captcha - or those annoying letters that you type in to prove you are human?  Have been "Defeated" by spammers.  Thus - we've had issues on the forums.

If you see a suspicious thread? Please just use the "notify moderator" link on that post.  It's quick, and goes to those that need to get it.

ALSO - as business owners, gamers, etc - if you ever have issues with a post or content put up on the site - that is also the system to use for that.  It's quick, and we get it.  Of course, PLEASE DO NOT ABUSE THIS :)

Sorry for the issues, and we'll do our best to keep the site clean!  We appreciate the help!

I wish that there was some sort of way that it could be limited to just the text. The pictures are just down right offensive. -_- I hate that.

Why cant we do this.  Make a new usergroup.  Call it Probationary and lets make a rule that says after 5 Meaningful posts we will allow you access to link images and links?

make that Probationary Group no allowed to Post images and links.   I Have a deal to maybe ward off some of the bots. But have to wait till saif gets home later.  I have it on the dev site now working, just need to let saif take a look at it.

Or, you could upgrade the CAPTCHA system. Or use the 'picture select' thing they are using nowadays.

Its not offered on this version of SMF.  It will be offered on SMF 2.0  its in beta right now.  But Saif nor I would want to fool with beta software for an active site.  We have a fix incoming just bare with the  spam for a little bit.

Simple gets the job done - SMF.

PhpBB - is also a LARGE large standard, which gets hacked at / etc more frequently as a result :)

well dezmen(Justin here) BOTS cannot read the captcha thing its based on an algorithm. people have cracked the algorithm. so they are able to have bots run the program that hacks the algorithm. it automatically types it in. new registration. TADA... although they do it numerous times.

this is just a simple an basic explination of the thing...

ps. dezmen you should hae the halotech be to z b r e a t h e account not BR Dezzz :P

Captcha for when you signup, not post.

Anyway,  new Captcha installed, let's keep a close eye on it - I doubt we'll have another issue now, but we'll see.

Thanks goes to Furyswrath!
