Representing Tulsa for SFIV here.

Are we doing Vanilla Street Fighter or Super?

17
Sadly, despite my attempt to hype this tournament here, I've decided it would be in my best interests in regards to my occupational and financial needs that I will not be attending this tournament.

Doing so would require me to skip two scheduled days, which is a big no-no at this point of time.

I cannot join the folks in Arkansas either, since the event is within three weeks, and it would be impossible to request days off now.

Dem bills, man. Dem bills.

I'd love to attend, but I have a previous engagement that I'm set to attend in Wichita, and I only have enough funds to attend just one.

Love to play you guys, but Wichita always comes first for me, since I was born there and been there hundreds of times.

Little Rock is completely unknown to me.

I rather throw 30 SC4 tournaments with 8 people showing up than 1 20 man SF4 tournament that has no hardware...

I see your point, and I agree. In these past couple of tournaments, having no hardware has been a pain. But, being the forgive-and-forget person that I am, I said to myself, "surely this wont happen again."

And it does.

And it's in times such as these that, when no one else is willing to stand up to do something about it, I will take up the call, since no one else is in a hurry to do so. It was a pain in the past because I used to live 50 miles away from Tulsa, but now that I live on 71st and Lewis and about 4 miles from both the Funhouse and Alien Games, bringing hardware wont be that big of a hassle.

If it was up to me alone, I'm not sure SF anything would be guaranteed Smiley  Lucky for the SF community, it's not up to me alone lol.   Also, I wonder if SSF is why the community seems to have kinda gone into recession, maybe just waiting?

I wouldn't say it has gone into recession, but people are slowing down since they realize that, in just a little over a month, they'll never be playing Street Fighter IV again. They're going to have to adapt to new characters, moves, and stats, but the game is going to stay the same. If anything, SSFIV will garner more people this time around. Frankly, I'm excited for whatever is going to happen this summer with SSFIV across this state.

As for spreading the word, working in radio has taught me that advertising is the difference from getting nothing and getting something. With that in mind, I never really saw any flyers advertising this tournament anywhere outside the actual venue. Either that, or my eyes were preocupied with something else over at the used game stores and comic shops that I venture to.

If you're leaving it up to the community to spread the word, then I'll make an additional effort in printing some flyers out over at the Fed Ex shop and posting them at the shops previously mentioned. I would like to see new faces, but before that, I have some revenge to dish out.

Street Fighter IV revitalized the tournament scene here in America and it is the most popular 2D-ish fighting game out there. Being a dedicated fan, I want this fact to be reflected onto Tulsa more properly.

It may sound a little self-serving to cater to one community over the other colorful ones like BlazBlue, Tekken, or even Soul Calibur, but at this point, I'm willing to dedicate some of my free time in facilitating a more vibrant and active SF scene as opposed to sitting around and letting someone else do it for me. Besides, if the rest of the SF scene isn't going to bother to bring hardware, then I can't trust them to help make the scene bigger.

If everything goes correctly, these next couple of months should prove to be interesting.

Also, Saif, I would like to extend an open invitation for you to join us. Why don't you give SFIV a try? Play around with some of the characters, see what works for you and what doesn't. I think you'd be good enough to hang with the rest of us. What do you say?

This isn't necessarily a hype thread about the tournament, but it does make you think.

A Vintage Stock store is holding an SSFIV launch tournament inside a Vintage Stock in Lee's Summit, MO. Which is next to Kansas City.

Tulsa has (to my count) five Vintage Stocks within the metro area. Three inside Tulsa, one in Broken Arrow, and one in Owasso.

Now, if only there were some way to let the local Vintage Stock managers that the locals here would like something similar to what the store in Lee's Summit is doing?

Blazblue = Dumb. Go TEKKEN!

You're both wrong.

GO SUPER STREET FIGHTER IV!

Oh who am I kidding, that's practically guaranteed.

OH - Running out on my photos AND giving attitude?!  If you hadn't brought hardware, we'd be squabin' right now lol.

It's in my tournament box, I should have it for you next event - lucky I did save it, running out on my photos!

Well, I was tired and I felt terrible for not doing as well as I'd hoped. Plus, I had work that night and I needed to get as much sleep as I could.

Keep it for me, I'm going to use it as a discount for the next tournament I go to.

Next time is going to be different. Being in the top 3 is nice, but it isn't number one. And I'll win one of these tournaments, mark my words.

Also, after what happened, not only will I make it a habit to bring hardware to every tournament from now on, but I'm also going to show up as early as I possibly can in order to claim the best TVs. These 18-inch piece-of-crap LCD TV's aren't cutting it no more, and I will accept nothing less than the absolute best.

Now, get something cooked up for April, I'll be waiting.

Screw the game, we should just hold a thumb wrestling tournament with these things.

I call Zangief, by the way.

24
I'll do it. I have some people in Oklahoma City I need to get revenge on.

Just hurry and post a date, though, because I'd hate to not show up because I couldn't request the day off in time.

25
3rd Place?

Again?

I thought I did worse.

Where's my money, Saif?

26
I didn't live up to my expectations. Turns out that I can't successfully work an entire night's shift and then try to harness enough concentration to be decent at a tournament.  :-\

Oh well, looks like I'll have to get a good night's sleep next time around.

PS3

360.

It's okay, I got sticks on each side. I'm covered.

But if it's such a big issue, why haven't I've seen any individuals bring 360's to a tournament?

There's a lot of talk about it here, but not a single thing is done by anyone at any tournament I've been to in order to switch the consoles.

Actually, no one brings any consoles since we end up playing on AnimeFreaks all the time.

Oh, and about my earlier statement about not showing up. Turns out that, after further consideration, I'll be coming after all.

But boy will I be tired for work tonight.

Edit: Okay, maybe we're not going to be playing on AnimeFreak's console this time.

Gentlemen, it is with a heavy heart that I announce that I will not attend this tournament due to a scheduling conflict with other, more essential tasks in my life (Read: Job).

I'll see you in April.

There is an article which states the following.

Quote
Wichita's first big tournament for the new year now has a date!

Following last year's popular team tournament, War Games is continuing the trend with a new two man team tournament for Street Fighter IV and a three man team tournament for Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion.

There are still singles tournaments for the team-based games and a variety of other games, including Street Fighter II: HD Remix, BlazBlue, and Melty Blood: Actress Again.  Participants are welcome to bring their own games and set up stations as well.

I spoke to the event coordinator, Petro Irving, about the tournament and what his plans are.  He told me in a phone interview that he organizes these tournaments every four months, "hoping that they catch on and put Kansas as a fighting force in the midwest."  He also spoke of raising awareness for gamers and non-gamers alike, providing "something even the casual gamer would like."

This is his fourth tournament in two years.

Petro Irving also mentioned that he hopes someday to host the tournament at the Intrust Bank Arena in downtown Wichita.  He's heard of the large tournaments in the western part of the U.S. and wants to draw in crowds as large as the ones at Evolution and in California.  His goal is 2,000 attendees.

"Last time we had people from Kansas City and Oklahoma.  It was cool that a girl came all the way down from Manhattan, too.  This time I want to see people from Missouri and hopefully Nebraska comes too."

So, guessing from what this says, he holds these tournaments periodically.

I believe the last one was in November.

And from what I've gathered, they're pretty big since they attract everyone from the surrounding area.

I don't know whether or not he'll be able to reach his goal of getting crowds as large as EVO, but if he manages to make Wichita for the Midwest what Los Angeles is for the West Coast and what New York City is for the East Coast, then he will be the greatest man in the world in my books.

Personally, I'd love it if Tulsa managed to generate a big enough SFIV scene, but it looks like we're destined to play second banana to Smash Bros.

Not that there's anything wrong with Smash Bros, but still...

Did someone say free drinks with venue fee?
