First Person Shooters / Play Halo 3 and Help Haiti ! Jan 20th and 21st
« on: January 18, 2010, 02:38:57 pm »
For those looking to help people in Haiti in creative ways, Bungie has announced that the more people who play Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST on Xbox Live Wednesday and Thursday, the more money it will donate to the cause.

Bungie wrote on its company blog that gamers who play Halo 3 or Halo 3: ODST on Xbox Live any time on Wednesday or Thursday will need to wear a "special emblem signifying [their] commitment to the cause." That special emblem is a red heart that can be added to the user's player by visiting the "Appearance" menu. Bungie will donate $100 to the Red Cross for every 1,000 gamers that participate. Gamers need only to play one game to qualify.

Bungie will keep donating cash to the Red Cross, up to a total of $77,000.

The developer is also offering donations in other ways. Those who buy a special edition t-shirt in the company's store can also help the cause. Bungie said that all the proceeds on the sale of those shirts will go directly to the American Red Cross. All profits in the Bungie store in February will also be donated to the Red Cross.

If you want to learn more about how you can work with Bungie to help relief efforts in Haiti, click here.

Play Halo with that heart emblem to help Haiti.

General Chat / Im a Tournament N00b .. what do i need?
« on: January 16, 2010, 03:40:54 pm »
So Im starting this thread to compile some Data for a FAQ Sheet Id like to do.

I love games.. else I wouldn't be apart of Okgamers . However ... Since I dont Personally Play competitively.. Sometimes I dont know all the latest Maps / Updates / Or game-play rules. And I dont think many other people do either that may want to get involved and come to tournaments.  So Kinda A Pre-lude to attract more people and maybe even some new blood to the Gamer Scene. Id like to put this list together and post it. Maybe even pass it out with OkG Fliers and such as we meet new people.

And Since there are so many to keep up with Id thought Id start this thread and start compiling a list.

lets start with some Basic Down to Earth Questions.  Pretend I know nothing about Gaming Tournaments, just answer the questions as if I was a complete n00b. and then add anything else youd like seen added to the List im making.

1. I play XYZ Game. Do I have to complete the Game in Single User Style in Order to play Competitively?
2. I play FPS and/or Fighter games, What Equipment do I need to bring to a tournament.
3. Is there anything Special i need to Download for my game to play competitively?
4. About how much Money do I need to bring?
5. Is there a Min. age to play?
6. I Play single Player Mode really well, But suck once I Play on-line? What am I doing wrong?
7. I hear people talk about that xyz TV Sucks it Lags.  I have a LCD TV/Monitor how do I know if its good enough to Play on? I use to to play on and see no issues. How do I Know?

These are Generic Questions, Just answer them for they style of game play your skilled in.

Thanks!

General Chat / Gal Gamers Geekier Than Guys
« on: December 23, 2009, 06:44:16 pm »
Here is an article written over at scientific America.

Quote
A study in the Journal of Communication found that women who engage in a role-playing game online actually spend more time in the alternate reality than the guy players do. Karen Hopkin reports.

Picture a gamer, someone who spends countless hours immersed in one of those online role-playing alternate realities. And what do you see? Is it a physically fit female closer to 40 than 14? If not, you may need to rethink your assumptions about geekdom. Because a study in the Journal of Communication shows that when it comes to dominating the virtual world, women are actually more hardcore than men.

Scientists conducted a survey of some 7,000 players who were logged on to a game called EverQuest II. And they discovered some interesting things. First off, the average age of the gamers surveyed was 31. And that playing time tended to increase with age. Which is also where the sex differences come in. The female gamers actually logged more time online: an average of 29 hours a week, versus 25 for the males, with the top players putting in 57 hours a week on the girl’s side, and 51 for the guys. What’s more, it looks like women are more likely to lie about how much they really play. The researchers found that the gals tended to lowball how long they spend glued to the screen.

So, never ask a women her age. Or how much time she spends defeating the dark elves to rebuild the world of Norrath.

—Karen Hopkin
