Thread Archives / Censorship - we need to find a list imo...
« on: January 03, 2007, 01:41:33 pm »

So - while I WASNT really planning on this being the first advisory board change to hit the forums first, I figure it's good to start the conversation / motion to get it done.

--

Censorship - we need it.

Why?  We serve the needs of the gamer community around Oklahoma to get the word out about events, and tournaments...

That means 2 big things when it comes to censorship.

Sponsors, and venues - are businesses.  They can't support a online resource that would be offensive to the clientele they support, and the families they serve.  So - when it comes to a business POSTING about a event or tournament - as we need to get to that point more and more; they can't post, and then have someone using offensive language on their event thread, with their good name attached.

Gamers - aren't all 18 and up.  So - because we have younger folks around, and their parents who have to approve as well, and that means censorship at some level.

What kind of censorship?  Well, self censorship - something we'll develop a thread about and ask posters to please adhere to.  Basic "don't go sailor on the forums" stuff...

And.  Word Bans.

We are not here to re-write what is accepted in the social vocabulary - we are here simply to adhere to it.  There are words considered offensive, and all around accepted as "NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR MINORS" - and those are the words we need to censor...

The forum software can replace a word out.  Let's take - the F word.  We could make it frag.  So on, so forth.

However - we need a good list / a resource to pull from to make that list from.  I KNOW somewhere online - there has to be a "these words aren't allowed" list.  Can - anyone help find this?

--

So - in review.  Censorship - please remember that there are younger folks online, and don't say anything you wouldn't say in front of your mother or friend's little siblings.  We'll get a thread out about that soon.

Also, does anyone know / can find a 'average American banned word list' or such.  Maybe whatever the American broadcasting follows for say TV and radio?  THAT would be good I bet...

[email protected]#

[ AND NO.  DO NOT START POSTING BAD WORDS HERE.  You want to make sure a word is covered?  PM it to me.  Like I said, this isn't a RE-DEFINING mission.  This is a going along with the status-quo job, so we keep it clean enough for families, and the companies that they support, that are in turn, maintain our goal of supporting and broadcasting about gaming events around Oklahoma. ]

Due to possible weather issues this tournament has been pushed back two weeks and will now take place on Jan 28th. We apologize if this causes possible schedule conflicts but we as OKgamers and Funhouse management feel it best to postpone. -Hollywood

This thread is to Pre-Register for the OKgamers.com Monthly Tournament series. For all details other than Pre-Registration, go to the current tournament thread: http://www.okgamers.com/forums/index.php?topic=177.0

**REGISTRATION CLOSED AS OF SATURDAY THE 13TH AT 11PM CENTRAL**

Pre-Registration

It is time again to do the pre-registration for the monthly tournament. Like last month if you do pre-register you can only sign up yourself and one other person making a total of two people that you are signing up, if you have alot of friends that want to go TELL THEM ABOUT THE SITE AND HAVE THEM SIGN UP.

We throw these tournaments to get the word out about the site, so that hopefully people use it, it becomes a resource, and there was some purpose in us putting our time and efforts into it :)  You know, making Oklahoma a better place and all that jazz.

**THIS THREAD IS ONLY FOR PRE-REGISTRATION POSTS** Any duplicate posts, or chat will be edited out.  Please keep this thread clean, it's easier for us to see what's going on / print out for use later.

Games?
Halo 2 players wanting to help out and bring hardware MUST pre-register.  In order for you to have a team name - you MUST PRE-REGISTER.

Any other game played at a Monthly tournament - **please pre-register**, it helps us to know how many to expect, if we'll have any hardware help, and if we have questions of you, who to contact.  Please take a minute and pre-register.

Games / Cost / Format / signup times / are all covered in the actual tournament thread, read there for details: http://www.okgamers.com/forums/index.php?topic=177

To Pre-register:

IN ORDER TO PRE-REGISTER, YOU MUST USE THE CORRECT FORMAT AND ONLY BE SIGNING UP YOURSELF AND ONE OTHER

Format your post this way:

NAME: I think thats pretty easy.  Yes, we'll expect you to answer to this name.
TEAM NAME: If applicable, so smash64 / Halo2 please post.
GAME(S) PLAYING: Pretty easy.
EQUIPMENT: What your able to bring, and details on items.  **BRING YOUR OWN CONTROLLER** for console games. TVs [what sizes? How many], the games, like HALO2 or SSB64.  And the consoles, n64's and Xboxes.

**On Equipment:**

Controllers = BRING YOUR OWN - if your playing a CONSOLE game [ps2/xbox/n64,etc] BRING YOUR OWN CONTROLLER.  We try and have a few extra laying around, but if you don't bring your own controller, you'll run into problems.

Bringing Hardware to help out? = Mark it ahead of time!  Take some tape, and mark your console, and other hardware your bringing, this helps!

Why do we ask you to bring anything?  See actual thread posted above.

***AFTER YOU POST*** - make sure and look at your post.  Does it look like everyone elses?  Good!  If not, you may get a pm from a mod asking you to fix it.  WE REQUIRE the format, so it's easy to read while we are throwing the tournament.  WE REQUIRE the 2 person limit on pre-registration, because we throw these only to get the word out about OKgamers.com - and the more people that use the site, and pre-register, and so forth, the more the word will get out.  Thank you, and we'll see you at the tournament!  [[Have you checked out the forums?  Don't miss out on something because you didn't take a second to see what other tournaments, events, or community chat is going on!]]
--

Please pay close attention to the forums and any polls that require input. More traffic equals a better chance for people to get what they want. Not happy with something?  We provide ways to get your feedback, use them!  Better yet, use the site for what it's meant to: Host your own tournament, post about it on OKgamers.com and spread the word!  We'd love to make everyone happy, but sometimes we just can't. Get it? Got it? Good!

[If you do host your own tournament?  PLEASE POST ABOUT IT.  Remember, we aren't out to compete with others or throw tournaments to make money.  We make no money.  We only want to get the word out about the site, so that it can be used, Oklahoma can be better networked, and we all end up more informed about events!  So if you know about a event, post it!]

OKgamers staff and crew along with the employees of Funhouse can not be responsible for lost or stolen items. We can not express our need for you to mark and watch all of your belongings more. We as the staff will do what we can to watch over the stuff the best we can, but you are still responsible.

When -
Saturday, February 3rd, 2007 - **NEW DATE.  Pushed back due to Snow.  2 more weeks to practice!**

Where -
Joe Momma's Pizza
10309 E 61st St
Tulsa, OK 74133
(918) 459-0096

[ Google Maps Link ]

Signup -
Showmanship Challenge - 2pm to 2:45pm
Skill Competition - 5pm to 5:45pm [tentative]

Starts -
3pm  - Showmanship Challenge
6pm - Skill Competition - [After Showmanship / sunset for the big screen...]

Cost -

2$ or a food purchase - Showmanship Challenge
5$ - Skill Competition

What to Bring -
Please bring your OWN GUITAR!  There may be a few available to use at the event, but bringing your own guitar is heavily encouraged.

Please bring your OWN HEADPHONES! The Skill Competition will have multiple consoles setup, as a result we'll be having you play with headphones.  We'll have a few pairs of headphones on hand, but they may or may not have volume adjustments.  Please bring your own pair.

Also, be sure to bring your entry fee, and if your dressing up, your costume for the Showmanship Challenge.

Format - 2 tournaments

Showmanship Challenge.  This is single elimination, one song play.  This will have prizes, but is considered to be more of the fun event!  The 'Showmanship award' will go to the player that rocks the hardest flair, keeps the music going on any given setting and shows his skills by keeping his fingers moving, all while looking cool.  Judging will be done, and swayed by crowd response.  Scoring on flair, accuracy / notes hit, and appearance will determine the winner of this tournament.  You can bring your own tricked out guitar.  You can bring your own flair.  You get to choose the song and difficulty...

..But will you rock?

Skill Competition, based on score.  Pool play; so the top half scoring players advance, the second half proceed into the losers pool.

Rules - are currently TENTATIVE.  What we are going with for now:

Songs will progress in difficulty, starting out with hard in the first few matches winners pool, and Expert in the final few matches.
Once the pools only have one in the winners pool, and one in the losers, both will compete on expert in the finals bracket.

If we have more than 32 people show up, we reserve the right to make the tournament single elimination.

Yes - you can sign up for one or the other, and not have to play in both.

--

Notes and upcoming information

Pre-registering -
How do you pre-register?  Simply swing by Joe Momma's and sing up!  If your interested in saying your coming on the forums, simply sign up here [takes just a minute], and post a new comment on this thread.

Double Elimination Details -
This tournament is currently planned to have at least 5 to 7 songs chosen from a pool of 8 or so songs picked to be played on hard, and 2 songs chosen to be played on expert.

--

WHY have  2 tournaments?

Having a "Style based tournament" or the Showmanship Challenge brings together both aspects of the game to this event - for people awesome at the game, they have the normal score based tournament.  For people that dress up and look like a rock star, or just have that onstage charm - but not necessarily hitting all the notes on expert?  The Showmanship Challenge lets you shine.

You a straight forward points machine?  Then the Skill Competition is for you!

--

What should / could you bring?  Beyond your entry fee, we highly encourage you to bring your own guitar, and your own set of headphones. Guitars will be there, but bringing your own guitars is encouraged, as the more controllers there are / won't have to be shared, the quicker the tournament will move.

The Showmanship machine will be setup to maximize 'performance' and audience appeal.  It will be set up differently than the Skills Challenge - with the sound actually playing out from the machine.  However, for finals, the Skills Challenge will be on the projector!

Practice up, and get your costumes ready, you've got till February the 3rd!

Oh - you heard me.  HALO [email protected][Keep an eye on this thread for more details, once fully fleshed out, we'll probably just move this thread from the planning forum, into the actual tournament forum.]

It's happening - go help out / register / yea - http://www.okgamers.com/forums/index.php?topic=249.0

So Halo players, you've said you want a Saturday Tournament.

You've said you want more tournaments happening.

You've said you want something big.

Well - one Halo player in particular, put his money where his mouth was, and hooked OKgamers up with a potential sponsor.  His connection said they were down for helping out, for a big tournament, and is providing the space.  Now?

 - We need to verify the date is good for CompUSA - pending currently, but should be good.
 - We need HARDWARE guranteed from players.  I've stated I'll do a 4v4 AND FFA tournament / room for this thing, but we've got to have some serious hardware considerations taken care of.  [16 x 4?  We've got the room...] AND THE POWER SUPPLIES!  YAY!
 - We'll need Tournament Staff.  OKgamers is about to put out a call for specific and general use staff, be on the look out, and sign up.
 - We need to make it big?  People wanted to have something large in Oklahoma, and this could be it.

Looking to have sponsorship from Joe Momma's Pizza on this as well, so some good tastin prizes!

--

Date - tent - 2/24/07

Time - setup around 11? - Tournaments start at 1pm  [We'd need to be done by 8ish...]

Cost - TBD.  I figure put to another vote, just honestly.  No location fee, so good times.

--

Well - let's figure this out.  Spread the word.  Yea.  Also, this could lead to a fourth Saturday of the month thing consistently after this.  Just depends on how it goes / yea.

That's right!

What anime convention?  Right now it's not totally finalized, but they've asked us to help out with their game room - so we know that it's going to be in Tulsa, it's going to be a full blown 3 day event, and it'll be in the August area?

--

DDR and Guitar Hero 2 - [email protected]#   They'll be having events to help fundraise for the convention, as a result, they'll have about 4 different tournaments over the course of the middle of next year!  So, around Feb-March keep an ear out for a DDR tournament!  Guitar Hero 2 after that, then back to DDR?  So on so forth.  Spread the word!

You have until the end of this month to vote - GET TO VOTING!

Halo Entry Fee's - UP FOR VOTE, please go vote!  Yes, we'll still have our standard 5$ location fee, but the actual Halo fee is up to a vote, so go vote now!!
--
Halo 2 4v4 teams is not an option this month due to complaints. Read about that / last tournament here.

Guitar Hero 2 and Madden are not an option this month due to the upcoming local tournaments.  Read the hype here.  No need to compete ;)  Same thing for Magic, see tournament forums.
--
***NOTE - DO NOT VOTE MORE THAN ONCE for one game!  No voting for both FFA and Team on the same game! THIS MEANS YOU HALO [email protected]#***

As usual, we will do our best to have the top 3 or more games at the next monthly tournament.  Initial D is being sponsored / ran by a local club, so that's already a guaranteed game.

Halo - is practically a given.  We'll take the top voted for format and go with it.  However, nothing is assured though, and as usual any game with the most votes, or at least close to 10 votes will get in.  Please don't vote for something you wouldn't want to play in.

Not on the list?  Three votes for a game not listed will get it added to the poll.  PM me if we miss these!
[**Why would a game not be listed?  We haven't seen / thrown a tournament for it.  If you can get the neccessary hardware between you and those you know to pull it off?  We'll happily run a tournament to our best abilities.  Gears of War falls under this - 'pulling it off' would require AT LEAST 3 to 4 Xbox 360's, and at least 2 to 3 full sets of controllers for example.**]

10 votes or a clear interest and turnout at a previous tournament is the requirement for the top 3 - any less would put the need for a tournament for that game into question.  So - get your friends to vote!

You have until the end of this month to vote.  Get friends to sign up if you have to, but get people voting for the games you want to see.  After that, we'll work in the games and rules onto the official thread, and put up the pre-registration thread.

293
Why are we voting?  Because - we don't know what is best, and want to make it fair to those attending.

KEEP IN MIND:
Any extreme will scare people off.  0$ or 20+$ - people won't show because of it.

What does your money go to?  The cost of 5$+? [whatever gets voted in] breaks down into 3 catagories:
- The location fee keeps our place to have tournaments in business.  We are taking up space in an arcade, so 'we charge' a 5$ fee, that gets you 10$ worth of tokens to spend on Funhouse's various arcade games.
- If we do charge beyond a location fee, OKgamers reserves the right to take 1$ to make more flyers that promote the tournaments / events / getting the word out about the monthly events, and really - the entire site and all that goes on there.
- Other than what's stated above, anything and everything else charged goes straight to prizes for the game charged for.

Our perspective?  We want you guys to have a good time - and if that means getting paid for doing a great job, so be it!  However, we won't scare people off with huge fee's - this should be accessable to anyone that wants to play, for a basic modest fee; we just don't know what is best.  Just so long as we balance these concerns, there won't be a problem.  Gas costs enough for some, people will pay to play, but we don't want to under or over charge.  So vote, and let us know what is best!

Yup, you heard me [email protected]  So, start spreading the hype, it's coming.

OKgamers held tournament?  Well, not exactly.  If there is such a thing as a 'official OKgamers tournament', it's only so far been the ones we throw to get the word out about this site as the networking solution for gamers in OK, and we do that monthly as you know.

These tournaments coming up are a result of a local business coming to us saying they want to have these things; and we are working out how we can help, what they need, and so forth over the next couple of weeks.

Guitar Hero 2 ='s just about as assured as it gets - look for it probably in the January / Feb area.

Madden ='s pretty much guaranteed too, and maybe with more than one corporate sponsor.

SPREAD THE WORD!  And, keep an eye on the tournaments forum.

General Chat / WELCOME to OKgamers.com - How'd you hear about us?
« on: December 06, 2006, 03:42:30 pm »
Welcome!  This site provides 2 things:

For Gamers directly - A Resource.  OKgamers has been getting Oklahoma out of the stone age, and finding more events and competition for the last 6+ years!  Here we are in THE INFORMATION AGE - and we miss tournaments, and gamer events right around the courner, why?  Because no one got a flyer?  No one casually mentioned it to you?

OKgamers.com is our central location to network - a place to put gaming events and tournaments for all to see.  One place you can be like "Hey, I'm bored, I wonder what's going on."  Or, "Woah, your throwing a tournament?  Have you posted it up on the internet yet?  No?  Go post it on OKgamers.com".

For Gamers indirectly - A Resource for Businesses.  Everyone loves a good event.  And within 6 months of starting up OKgamers - we started to have businesses coming to us asking for help; planning, running events, consulting, or maybe all of the above.  What we found?

OKgamers working with businesses is a win-win:  Gamers get more events, Businesses get more traffic and promotion, and as a "sponsor" or event organizer, OKgamers gets more promotion.

So?  Know a business throwing gamer events?  Tell them about us.
Know a business needing help with gamer related events?  Tell them about us.

As a non-profit OKgamers constantly helps the community;  we are your resource for local gaming info, and we kick start more gamer and gaming related events than we could have ever imagined.

--

"But I already surf my game's website - URLHERE.com"

Sure, the games we play have websites for them usually; but that doesn't help locals who are new to gaming, etc.  We need a local State focused selection.  We've watched for the last 6+ years as this concept breeds more cross-cooperation, bigger events, and more fun!  Why miss that next tournament because it didn't get posted to your game site?  Surf your game site, and keep weekly tabs on OKgamers - you never know what will show up as an event!

Welcome to OKgamers.com!

--

Also - check out these common resources:

And of course:  https://www.facebook.com/okgamers - You know the drill - GO, LIKE, AND HELP US SPREAD THE WORD!! :)

--

Please post how you heard about this site!  It helps those of us running and trying to spread the word about the site know if we are doing something right!  And what to improve on!

Thread Archives / Really being excited about OKgamers.com and the future...
« on: November 18, 2006, 01:41:38 pm »

As December looms over us, I've kinda been more and more reflecting on the whole OKg timeline over the course of this last year.  It's been up and down, and now it really is starting to look up.

Of course, the last few months gaming in the area hasn't been totally awesome.  Nu Wave closed.  Fun and Games closed.  No real results came from Mini-con, despite 1000 people seeing the flyers and tournaments.  And then most recently, a tournament called GridCon came and went RIGHT before a OKg Monthly Sunday tournament, and when I asked that Sunday if anyone had heard about it - nothing.  That frustrated me not for the con organizers, but here we were a year into OKg, and people still didn't know to post about things on OKgamers, and the average gamers didn't know about an event.  Man what is going on.

But things are getting better.  First off, OKgamers may have been around most of 2006, but we hadn't did anyone doing hardcore tournament throwing, or people willing to do shameless promoting like we've kinda started.  Also, we haven't had 'jobs' open to anyone other than a few friends of mine, to help empower people ya know?  You want to make a difference, give the person a position and let them go at it.  That's something we are going to have worked out by 2007, and on the site to sign up for, so good times.

In that same vein of positions, Daniel has stepped up to be editor and chief for the Articles and Reviews section.  This means making the site more than just tournaments and events, but making the site more of a resource - good for return traffic, and content that will help gamers be in the know about the events we've thrown, and the games that are out there.  Daniel has also put in a great core concept: resume builders need OKgamers.  Myself, a few others; we are doing this to just improve Oklahoma.  However, anyone that can help the 'OKg cause' we'll happily welcome in... Even if they aren't so much worried about gamers, as they are needing a place to show their talents off.  Video guys, writers, organizers, so much talent exists in the colleges and so forth around us - and if those people want to help with content and events, then so be it.  It creates a win-win situation - OKgamers.com gets some first rate help, and those helping get the valuable experience of real life work.

Also, just working with the connections we've made over the course of the year, plus making new ones has really been nice.  Nu Wave - I was practically BEGGING to put up their events, and then they went under months later without ever posting anything.  In contrast, recently going into 2 new places I hadn't talked to - All About Games in BA, and Top Deck Games just down the street from my house in Tulsa, I've had awesome conversations with the owners about the future.  One thing, as a small business owner my self, it's always great to meet people excited about their business too.  With this whole 'getting the word out to gamers' site being my personal project right now though, it's even better to run into people that it's going to be another core win-win situation with.

A 'events and tournaments' site, or a networking site, is only as good as it's content that draws users.
If OKgamers.com doesn't have content of events and tournys - then we won't keep gamers coming back.
If store owners just post what's going on event/tournament wise, they get people that hear about it.
We are promoting the site actively through flyers, so it helps both parties.

It seems so simple, but it just doesn't seem to sink in to everyone.  Meh - I'm just happy today after running into Top Deck and meeting a guy that has just about everything we have been missing.  "Missing" as in well, the site was created for 'gamers'.  That doesn't just mean halo players video games. It means people that table top game, roleplay, and card gamers as well.  However, beyond the occasional random card tournament, we haven't had ANYTHING for those other types of gamers.  Top Deck says they have Warhammer, and Yu-gi-oh and other types of tournaments all the time, and he seemed like he'd really get online and post the stuff, making the whole system work, and providing that content we need on here so very badly.  It just - was a good day.

Course, I can't say everything has all been good lol.  As you'll read shortly, once I put up the "Tulsa PS3 launch" article I wrote, when addressing some of the people outside of a Best Buy, you could see that a few people thought it was some kinda scam.  How do we over come [email protected]#  I mean are Oklahoman's either so lazy or so jaded that we think things won't work so we don't try, and when people are trying, it automatically means they are just trying to sucker you?  OY.  Anyway, not everyone was like that, but being an honest enough person, just trying to provide something to help gamers get more outta Oklahoma, just kinda annoys me -_-;;

Then of course lately the whole 'cursing on the forums' has came up among the forum mods.  It's not going to be an easy call.  The problem we face is - gamers aren't just 18 and up.  The kid that took 2nd place for the Guitar Hero Showmenship tourny back in August wasn't more than 14.  I talk to gamers all the time under 18, in fact a decent amount of the OKg regulars are still in school.  And of course, it's not the 16 year olds we are concerned about offending, it's the young teen's and their parents that we must not offend.  Kids are gamers too, and if we just whole hog curse and let the forums be a place for fowl language, we'll loose the younger demographic.  Something I don't want to do personally...  But the hard calls to come will be handled by 'the Board', or the group that gets together to finalize all the OKg idea's for 2007.

In the end though, we are starting to make an impact.  We've found a few positive sources of tournaments and events, we've made some connections with gamers at least in the Tulsa area, and maybe, just maybe, this thing'll work.  We'll get the word out about OKgamers.com  It'll start working, and gamers in Oklahoma, won't miss out on so much that goes un-advertised, and under the radar anymore.

Thread Archives / Do you want to change your OKg Forum Handle?
« on: November 18, 2006, 01:00:13 pm »
With 'joshuas' and 'jareds' floating around after the forum switch, I've been thinking it'd be good to, for a short time, open up the 'rename' option on the forums.

For those of us just joining us - we had a old forum solution that was very basic.  It didn't do PM's, or polls or anything lol, but we didn't know that till it was installed and tested out.  For those of us that signed up back then, we got a account name, and a 'screen name' - so you could be like yea my name is Bob Vila, but my handle is [email protected]#

When we switched forum solutions, the database just kept your account name as your one and only name?  Whatever it did, this means those people that signed up back in the day, might not have the name they want to display.

So - shout out if this is true.  Let me know you want to change your name, and we can come up with 'forum handle name change day' and allow for a short period for you to change your name to something else.  Monster Man - I'm lookin at you too bro LOL

As always - **yes** - we'll need hardware help.  Definitely Halo 2 hardware help if as we are to do 4v4.  If you bring hardware, and we use it, you'll recieve a discount on entry fee.  IF WE DONT HAVE ENOUGH HARDWARE, it will effect the tournament.

PLEASE HELP BY COORDINATING EFFORTS - the pre-registration thread is up, so go post what you are bringing, so we have a general handle on what is coming.

Cost -

Halo -
5$ - Location cost.  This gets you 10$ in tokens.
Pre-Registration = 3$  [Halo/smash players - you get an additional discount if you bring hardware and we use it, see prereg.]
At the door = 5$

Soul Calibur 3 -
Pay per play - so depending on how far you get, will depend on how much you spend ;)

Super Smash 64 -
5$ - Location cost.  This gets you 10$ in tokens.
**that's all.**  We will look into interest for 'putting money in for a pot / prize' right before the tournament starts, but this one, will probably just be for the pride.  And really, can you beat the established winners?  ;)

Pre Registration = Even with the games that don't get you a discount, it still helps us to know how many we'll end up serving, so please pre-register!
Pre-registration thread is here - http://www.okgamers.com/forums/index.php?topic=157

When charged: The location fee keeps our place to have tournaments in business.  If there is a charge beyond a location fee, OKgamers reserves the right to take 1$ to make more flyers for the tournaments / events / getting the word out.   All the rest goes towards prizes.

**Don't like a part of this setup?  Make your voice heard.  Show up.  Fill out a survey, we'll have one for you to voice your opinions on.  Make the next one better.  You will be listened to :)**
