Local Players General / Re: Looking for a LARP in Tulsa

MELEE in Tulsa is officially dead as of last month due to a lawsuit.  Who didn't see that coming? el oh el

the death throws of a game that's dying of cancer...

Unfortunately there is minute/non-existent MK scene in  OK, and of all the online fighters, MK has the absolute WORST net-code =\  I tried playing it online after only finding about 3 people in the Tulsa area who played and it is virtually unplayable compared to the rest of the online fighters.  I'm actually impressed with how smooth SC5's net-code is, and apparently the GGXX coming out later this year, I believe, is supposed to have a very impressive net-code.

less whining about a medium-paced console shooter with assisted-aim and more about posting results, especially of the fighting games.   the world wants to know what happened at what event.

*obligatory defamatory remark*

Do right regardless of what you are told instead of doing what youre told regardless of what is right, and we'll all get along swimmingly.

You come to the local game forum expecting poor gamers to sponsor you?  You've got a better shot selling lemonade.

Apparently you missed the "there are successful business models but they are few and far between."it is a high risk business because there are WWWAAAYYY more unsuccessful places.  He was originally talking about a static location, not running tournaments periodically.  I've also had a decade or more of working in the industry and dealing with national tournament scenes.  Success in the gaming industry is HIGHLY reliant on local demographics and "right place, right time.". While OKC may be a stronger market for it, tulsa is not.

In this day and age, its REALLY hard to get people to pay to do something they can do at home.  It's why lan centers, cyber cafes and arcades have gone the way of the dodo, state-side.  There are a few examples of successful business models, but they are few and far between and heavily reliant on regional demographics and other enticements, such as food, alcohol, etc.  Also, if you appeal to the high school crowd, you will need on site security or bouncers.  I worked about 10+ years in various arcade and family entertainment centers, and that demographic is almost more trouble than they are worth.  The closer to a high school you are, the more baby sitting you will be doing.
