General Chat / Blowing the whistle on DUST 514 (Console Fans)
« on: September 24, 2009, 03:37:24 pm »
Hey all you console guys. I just wanted to let you know about a game that's currently in development by CCP games. It's called DUST 514. Those of you who've played the MMO Planetside will find it immediately intriguing. Those of you who have played Halo (who hasn't) I'd like you to imagine a world where Halo was persistent. Meaning every battle you fought would matter. It would ultimately decide who has control over a planet and moreover effects on an entire war. And your motives are always player driven.

That's essentially the START of the great idea behind DUST. First of all, it's an FPS, and it'll be console ONLY! No PC players. CCP decided to make a console game for console players. You might have heard of the other game CCP has developed, a PC MMO named Eve-Online. It's consistently referred to as "the hardcore MMO for hardcore players", and "the cornerstone of sandbox persistent MMOs". Well now they're making a hardcore MMO-FPS for the console. And they're doing it in typical CCP style... BIG!
In addition to an assortment of weapons like any other MMO, it will have an assortment of vehicles as well. The vehicles will be modifiable as well to change some of their attributes. Weapon modifications will be possible presumably and there will be four races to choose from with varying qualities for each. You can expect regular balances and content updates as time goes on as well to get new weapons and options.
Also, sometime around then CCP will release "Cosmos" it's social network for DUST (and Eve) gaming. Allowing you to search for and join corporations (guilds) and forge new alliances, all while keeping your stats neatly laddered and providing a nice little social space to introduce others to your character.

The kicker?

DUST will be intimately linked to EVE. The storyline for you as a DUST marine will not be driven entirely by and NPC storyline you ultimately have no effect over. Although there is an NPC aspect the "endgame" is to be mercenaries for gigantic alliances that play eve-online. You and your corporation (guild) will be hired out to take planets from other alliances and their forces in an eternal epic war on a scale the gaming world has only ever seen in EVE. As you get better the more you can demand to be paid, alliances who hire you will also be able to assist you in other ways. Weapons and equipment as well as technology can be given to you by your employer. Hundreds (maybe thousands) of planets to fight over. Fighting in a daily struggle to capture more resources and more glory. Truly epic warfare driven by real players, that matters to real players.

Here's a fansite and the trailer from GDC Europe. Currently there isn't an official release date set though there's a great amount of speculation that is suggesting the release will be sometime in 2010.

I hope you all find this as exciting as I do. Of course, then again I'm an Eve player. But I'd certainly buy a console just for this one game if that says anything.

Hello there. My name is Marcus and I live in Tulsa. Some of you may have heard of me and forgotten me as I was very briefly involved with okgamers then I punked out to do other stuff for a bit. Many moons have passed since I posted to these forums, but now I'm back.

Back because there is a question I would like to ask all the OK Gamers.

Are you ready to rumble?

And by "rumble" I mean are there any PC gamers out there wanting to meet up to LAN out and play some PC games?

My aim is to collect a list of interested people that would check back at okgamers now and again to LAN play with local gamers. If there are enough of us I plan to evolve the group into one that would also support tournaments and so ons around Oklahoma and give back to okgamers.

Provided a decent (say 5 plus people) respond to this post and are interested in such a thing. And those five people genuinely think they would come to at least a few of the gatherings. I will host two events to get things started.

The first event is an MMO mixer. In this, I'm basically just hosting a party to meet others that play pc mmos. WOW, Eve-online, Guild Wars, etc. I would invite those coming to bring a copy of their game and show off their stuff if they like, etc. We'd do it at a place like Joe, Mamma's pizza or something like that.

The second would be a byob lan party. Seeing as it would be hard to agree on a game (not to mention exclude some players), I've decided to use a free-for-lan-game that all of us can play, and miraculously, doesn't suck. This game is "Savage 2". The bottom line is, in order to get a good group together to play other games we need to start with a game that everyone has easy access to. In this case we'll also benefit from Savage 2's diverse gameplay, bits of RTS, FPS, and Melee combo-based fighting are all implemented into the game, aside from mmos these are the basic gameplay styles that PC gamers enjoy.
If you remember me you know how I blabbed about savage before. The original was pretty decent. Savage 2 is spectacular IMHO. You can decide for yourself though.

Provided there looks like there's an interest in either of these things, I'll design flyers, make install cds/instructions, and put the appropriate posts here to get things started.

PC Gamers / Eve-Online corp
« on: April 06, 2009, 01:01:23 pm »
I need to find a good group of carebear miners to put my alt in. Preferably with some 0.0 space. It'd also be nice to know some okgamer toons for eve-online.

Any eve fans out there?

If not, let me give you a little description. Eve is a GIGANTIC MMO that currently sports the most players connected to a single concurrent universe of any MMO ever. It's space based, heavily player based, and has one of the most realistic working economies of any game. They hired a PHD in economics not to far back to manage it all.
Here are a few things that are "special" about eve:
-The skills are trained online or off. Online your knowledge of the game and your capabilities are far more useful than the skills you've trained. After you've been to war in eve you'll look at Wow and say "Raid smaid, 25 mans are nothing by comparison".
-Eve is all PvP. There is an "empire" area where you're very unlikely to be shot at but the majority of the game takes place shooting at other pilots.
-There is no ceiling. No level caps, no way to earn everything, it's nearly impossible for most people, dare I say, even rich people to have one of everything in the game. You will never finish it. Do not start trying to finish the game or even your character. This can't be done. I've watched people try for seven years.
-Eve has a wildly passionate community. There's a radio station, tv station, independent map makers etc the list goes on.
-More people play WoW, but not nearly as many on any given server/world.
-The NPC missions and achievements are for teh suk because it's so PvP based. Making money is boring and time consuming and ships cost millions where the average mission/day mining will only get you enough for basic ships or supplies. The silver lining is evading some pirates or blowing one to smithereens, or creating a corp where you conquer some 0.0 space and start making stuff for war.
-Wars in eve are really wars. Thousands against thousands. I was once in a fleet of 250 who went out in mass to take over some low security space. By now that number is far smaller than whatever the largest fleet was/is.
-Eve is wildly addictive.

I love eve.

Apparently a new service named "OnLive" is poised to rip the gaming market a new one. Possibly the end of the world as we know it. I believe it might have been a mayan prophecy. The basic idea behind it is that with a "decent" broadband connection they can stream video output of a game to your regular ol' Pentium 4 2.0 ghz with 1 gig of ram and a 40 gig hard drive. Stream.... over the internet. Among titles that can be played on the demo are apparently Crysis, Company of Heros, and F.E.A.R 2. Cloud computing has officially been introduced to the gaming community apparently.

Here's the kicker. All you need to play these games, is a basic computer (3d acceleration NOT required), a 4-5mb internet connection, and a TV/Monitor. Those being checked off, it would be technically possible to play ANY game brand new or otherwise in full HD glory. Apparently, OnLive's servers do all the complex crunching and processing required to create whatever it is that you see on the screen, then they stream it to you.

This is an old idea, what's impressive is that they're pulling it off. From initial reports the actual gameplay backs up the claims. So, I guess we can start counting the days buying expensive equipment is necessary to play that new awesome game all your friends have. We can also start counting down the days till games are made with this concept in mind and really impressive new things are done at server farms to blow your mind at home. Imagine if Blizzard's next game was developed knowing that every player would equally draw from the same awesome server farm! That home graphics cards, processing power, and memory etc wouldn't need to be taken into consideration for it's development. I bet the game would be chalked full of goodies we could never dream of having on your typical PC. And talk about stable. I would guess that more than 80% of stability problems have to do with strange configurations and software issues on the PC you're playing the game on. For PC gaming this would make a big turn to the kind of stability console gamers get out of the box, with the addition of realtime, no download necessary updates being made to the games themselves. Outstanding! Downtime that's 100% useful!

P.S. Wonderful side effect. It's likely this would be as simple to do in linux as it is on windows.... Goodbye windows, I won't miss you one goddamned bit you trojan whore! May you dine in ♥♥♥♥♥, there will be much gnashing of teeth.

General Chat / BOILING DEATH GRAVY!!! (flame/troll bait)
« on: January 21, 2009, 09:05:06 am »
Pre-clarification:

http://www.okgamers.com/forums/index.php?topic=2074.0

And now,
A visual aide:

boil
1   /bɔɪl/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [boil] Show IPA Pronunciation

1.    to change from a liquid to a gaseous state, producing bubbles of gas that rise to the surface of the liquid, agitating it as they rise.
2.    to reach or be brought to the boiling point: When the water boils, add the meat and cabbage.
3.    to be in an agitated or violent state: The sea boiled in the storm.
4.    to be deeply stirred or upset.
5.    to contain, or be contained in, a liquid that boils: The kettle is boiling. The vegetables are boiling.
–verb (used with object)
6.    to cause to boil or to bring to the boiling point: Boil two cups of water.
7.    to cook (something) in boiling water: to boil eggs.
8.    to separate (sugar, salt, etc.) from a solution containing it by boiling off the liquid.

death
/dɛθ/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [deth] Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1.    the act of dying; the end of life; the total and permanent cessation of all the vital functions of an organism.

gra⋅vy
/ˈgreɪvi/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [grey-vee] Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun, plural -vies.
1.    the fat and juices that drip from cooking meat, often thickened, seasoned, flavored, etc., and used as a sauce for meat, potatoes, rice, etc.

Apparently, together these words are powerful. To wield them you must know them. To know them you must follow in the footsteps of Socrates. Let us define Boiling Death Gravy. What kind of Gravy is it? Brown, white, BLACK AS THE DEVILS SOULLESS HEART!? Death, what kind of death was it, was it quick, slow, painful? Did the arteries clog, or was it from the crazy pills? Was it "natural"... unlikely as this involves gravy. Boiling.... Lets be honest this is just something that's really hot.

SO BURNING PLASMA DELICIOUSNESS! You can't help but want a little taste, but a taste is already too much. As we all well know Gravy is very addictive, perhaps the most addictive substance known to man. And this gravy BOILS! Fires deep within mordor licked the ancient cauldron it was smelt in. So, once you've had a taste, you can't have enough, and the more you have the more it burns your soul. Before you know it you're the broken, and charred remains of a man.

All I have to say is... Don't forget the ~$>#'in biscuits.
