OKgamers has had an anniversary event for years now; while the last one didn't go as 100% smoothly as we'd like it?  It was still a successful event that 350+ people enjoyed.

Now - we plan for 2013, and the keyword is Convention.
This anniversary tournament series has been great, but it needs to grow.  We achieve that through "Convention" status - more events, more casual gaming, gaming cosplay events, panels & workshops; etc.  A larger scope of people care, talk about it, etc.  HOWEVER?

Do we do a 1 day - or a 2 day?
1 day?  Is what we've been doing; we can host it at TCC Metro, who's already said yes.  We can expand into the surrounding area's for the new aspects, etc.  Cost will be kept low due to TCC's sponsorship, and we can know we will welcome the masses with ease.
  • Big Tournaments, and as a Convention, bigger sponsors
  • The same great quality of events, expanded into even more chance to get local exposure.  (Aka, Casual Events / "Convention" status spreads better than "Tournament")
  • Gaming Cosplay Event
  • Gaming related Panels

2 day?  A lot goes up in the air; TCC may not be able to support this; we've not met on it.  Also, with a 2 day event that change could be good, or bad:
  • If no TCC?  We may have to charge as much as $20 at the door - if you vote 2 day, you are saying you would attend, and will pay that.
  • If no TCC, we need a hotel; that is literally starting to talk a $20,000 budget to "do it right" - if the event fails because we go 2 day, it may cripple future events, period.
  • Yet, if no TCC - we may have a bit more flexible timeline; that said bumping it up to a convention may gain us that at TCC as well.
  • If no TCC - we could do it "not downtown", which seems to scare the un-initiated.  To be frank, TCC or our current Hotel choice?  Both are right off the BA Expressway / highway.
  • 2 days - means Tournament Finals will be on Sunday; locals will have to plan to have additional time invested, travelers will have to rent a hotel room.
  • TCC or at a hotel, we are close to hotels.

1 day can be rushed; stretching it out over 2 days causes gamers to part with more finances, which can be an issue.

Eventually, any event like this that grows will have to be 2 days.
However, going to a 2 day format too early could potentially hurt the event, even causing it to die out.
It's a big decision: we need to know what the public wants, so we can support it.

PLEASE VOTE HERE:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/oklahomagamers/10150661685293192/

We'll be meeting and making plans in the next few weeks:  making decisions and locking in details for an event late March, 2013.  Please help arm us with what the public wants - vote, and share it with fellow gamers!

(Note, feel free to ask questions, point out things, etc in this thread - HOWEVER, if you DO NOT USE THAT LINK ABOVE AND VOTE, it's all for naught.)

Fighting games have had a resurrgance in the last few years - and groups have come up as a result.

Do you run one?  Please post here so we can add you; all you have to do is be open to new players.

Thinking about joining, but didn't what to do?  Read below for more.  Some ask you to go to the next tournament for the game - talk to players.  You'll find the various "weekly gathering people" there, and they'll be interested in you joining up.  Others will let you just join right up; often it depends on venue, event, etc.

Why should we get together and game?

Any fighting gamer that's put some time into their game knows - you've got to play others to get better.

Online is great for FPS, but sucks for fighters.
Playing just your small group of friends?  Won't get you too far.
Online resources will teach you moves, combos; but you won't learn to hone those into your own style without serious competition.

If we have a group in your city for your game?  Join us.
If there isn't, and you've got a home situation where you can, or a venue where you can - start a gathering.

Your game community will grow, OKgamers will promote your existance - and Oklahoma?  Will become an even stronger force; drawing more events and gamers to us, and benefiting us all.

Soul Calibur Thursday Nights - SC5, Other
GOOGLE MAP LINK (based off address)
In Tulsa  on Thursdays
7pm till "end", when people leave

Location: House
Address: 31st and Yale area

Game List: Soul Calibur 5 is the main game; Smash Bros and other titles slip in as there is interest

Event Description:
Tulsa has a history of playing Soul Calibur since before 1998...
...as the game went from arcade to console, Funhouse was no longer the central hub, we separated out into homes.
As Funhouse has now closed, we carry on playing the console game when it's popular and there are events to attend, etc.

Tulsa has sent players to Soul Calibur Nationals since SC2; we hope to make sure SC5 is the same.

It's not all pros - we have people who just started, and people who have been playing for 10 years.  We understand that the bigger our group, the more we help each other?  The better players we all become.

Join us - because you enjoy the game.
Join us - because you want to get better.

Join us - and help us beat down Texas, own up on Arkansas, and remind KS and MS they never stood a chance in the first place.

As events come up we will travel; there are at least 6+ Soul Calibur 5 events we plan on either traveling to, hosting in the Tulsa or OKC area, and beyond.  Practice with us?  And you'll find seating in some of these trips; and if you've never travelled for a fighter - you may not have lived.

Our Facebook Group - is where we most actively plan our weekly gatherings, details and discussions come up more frequently, etc.  Make sure you check it out.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/tulsasoulcalibur/

Is our event too far, too full, or you've already got a group?  Please let us know here, and add your group to the list:

PRE-REGISTRATION
CLICK HERE: https://tokyousainc.wufoo.com/forms/okgamers-6th-anniversary-preregistration/

WANT TO KNOW WHO'S SHOWING UP?  We'll see you on the 25th up :)  In all honesty, people won't find out about this in some cases till the day of.  Some gamers wouldn't pre-reg, even though it's free AND saves you money - just because they are lazy, etc...  Pre-reg usually only accounts for 30% of actual attendance at some events!  However, to encourage the use of pre-registration we've waived the organization fee if you d0 pre-reg.  See the smart ones here.

ATTENDEE LISThttps://tokyousainc.wufoo.com/reports/okg6th-attendee-list/

HARDWARE
OKgamers will have 16 Asus "No lag" style monitors at this event for Fighters.
HxC LAN Center will have 16 setups.
OKgamers Community Leads will help provide consoles and hardware for their games.
Attendees that can bring "full setups" - aka no-lag TV, console and games will have organization fee's waived, and high-5's given.

HALO REACH HAS BEEN ADDED: however it's 100% "community provided", aka HxC has worked with Halo gamers to make sure we have at least 8 setups to run the event on showing up...  BUT, we are paranoid; gamers lives change, etc - MAKE SURE if you are coming for Halo Reach you bring a hardware setup if you can!  If we don't have enough hardware to run the event, we do reserve the right to cancel it!  (We should be fine; but help insure that by bringing your Halo Setup if you can!)

ATTENDING HARDWARE - you can see on the Attendee List - https://tokyousainc.wufoo.com/reports/okg6th-attendee-list/

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING AS A TOURNAMENT PARTICIPANT?
If you plan on playing in a tournament - your entry fees in cash and your own controller, as extra controllers will not be present beyond what gamers brought to use themselves.  (Cash?  Yes, sorry, no CC machine here guys lol.)

And yes, Obviously: Console gamer = correct console controller, PC gamer = keyboard.

"You mentioned bringing hardware." - for those hardcore and/or helpful members of the fighting or FPS community, yes, we do have people bring hardware.  Luckily for those 2 types of gamers, 4 to 8 setups go a long way, only requiring a few to bring hardware; if you want to help out, we have an area on the pre-registration form, please let us know what you can bring!

NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR DRINK!
Why?  While we will be there for a while, the good news is TCC Metro's Campus Cafeteria area will be opened up to us!  Plenty to purchase in snacks, drinks, and food!  They may have hours they run their grill vs not, etc - just make sure to check in with them after pre-registration, etc!

--

We've been planning this event for months, but still have some sponsors and details to lock down; check back here for updates!!
ENJOY GAMING?? Don't miss out on this, it has something for EVERYONE!
See you in February at one of Oklahoma's largest yearly gaming events!

--

Flyer IS ATTACHED - please spread the word where you can!  Community Leads and Supporters, if you are wanting to do a big run, we do have flyers printed as well if you want to get those.

OKgamers supports National community standards; we want OK to be competitive when they travel out.  We want OK to be competitive, so we use standards that allow out of state players to come in, and trust that we work by the proper rules.

These can be discussed

General:

3 stock
8 min. time limit
Team Attack ON
Pause OFF (if possible)
Items set to OFF and NONE

Starter Stages:

Battlefield
Final Destination
Smashville
Pokémon Stadium (Melee)
Yoshi's Island (Brawl)

Other allowed stages:

Castle Siege
Lylat Cruise

Set procedure:

0. In case of disputes, before, during, or after character selection:
0.1. controller ports are decided via coin flip (in doubles, the winner of the decision only selects the first to connect of the four ports), or other random methods if agreed by both sides.
0.2. in doubles, any player can make any opposing team with a Lucario, Sonic, or Pokémon Trainer change team color (also known as the Colorblind Rule).
0.3. if disputing the first characters to be played in a set, one side must blind pick by writing down or privately disclosing the name of their character(s), and reveal character choice after the opponent selects character(s).
1. Character selection.
2. The Starter Stage to be played on is agreed upon, selected through RANDOM, or each player strikes one until one remains.
3. The winner of the previous match may ban a stage for the remainder of the set.
4. The loser of the previous match declares the stage in which the next match will take place.
5. The winner of the previous match selects character.
6. The loser of the previous match selects character.

Rules and clauses:

Double Meta Knight is banned in doubles.
Pause Rules: A player that pauses the game while all characters are under player control must self-destruct a stock, or let the game finish in case of an inevitable win/loss. A referee may opt for no penalty in case of a pause not affecting the match (for example, during KOs in singles matches). Otherwise, pausing is allowed if agreed by both players.
DSR (Dave's Stupid Rule): Unless agreed otherwise by opposing sides, no player/team may select a stage they have won on during the current set.
Ledge Clause (LGL, ledge grab limit): If a player exceeds 35 ledge grabs (13 in one stock rematches) they will automatically lose the match. This is ONLY in the event of a timeout. If both players exceed the limit the winner will be decided by the tie breaking rules.
Tiebreaking: If the time runs out, the winner is decided in descending order by Ledge Clause (whoever exceeds it loses; in doubles it counts as broken by the team if either of its members breaks it), then stocks (the sum of the team in doubles), then percentage (the sum of the team in doubles). If both players/teams lose their last stock at the same time, or a match was completely tied upon time out, Sudden Death's result is taken into consideration; or a 1 stock match with 3 minute time limit is played (to the TO's discretion). Hanging on the ledge more than once during Sudden Death counts as a forfeit.
Stalling is banned: It's forbidden to stall the match with freezing characters, unreachable positioning, or infinite locks. A KO move must be dealt around 300% tops following a lock.
Understage travel clause: Understage travels can't be repeated until stepping on the main stage (platforms don't count). In the event that a player going under the stage more than once before touching the main stage, they must forfeit one stock.
Meta Knight's Infinite Dimensional Cape glitch is banned in all variations.
If a game is interrupted, for example by the disc being unable to be read, or a power outage, the match must be restarted whole or under similar conditions (to the TO's or a referee's discretion).
Gentleman's Rule: Any rule(s) may be waived or added if agreed by both sides, unless the TO objects.

Bracket and pool specifications:

The bracket will be Double elimination.
Players in the bracket are separated by the TO's perceived skill or by the area's Power Rankings list.
Pool set victories are determined by best of two matches (they may result in ties), and only have Battlefield, Final Destination and Smashville as available stages.
In the event two or more players are tied at the conclusion of a round of pools, players will be compared with each other on various criteria in this ordered precedence:

Set Wins
Wins
Losses
Head to Head
One Game Rematch

Conduct Rules:

Mw3 2v2 - http://www.okgamers.com/forums/index.php/topic,3855.0   (rules were being worked out, as National Standard is "fluid" currently)

BYO TOURNAMENTS RULES
Any tournament we help run will go by standard National rulesets; whatever the National community for a game uses, is what we'll use.

VINTAGE STOCK DUCK HUNT TOURNAMENTS RULES
Participants will have to stand behind the taped line. You are allowed as many attempts as can be made until Techcon is over; however you must be respectful of other people and not hog the game all day. We will run from 10 am to 9:30 pm, announcing a winner after that.

BEAT THE PROS OVERALL RULES:
All pros will have cash on hand to hand out if anyone manages to best them; they'll be prepared to give out cash to anyone who can best them in $5 and $10 increments.

HOW MANY TIMES CAN I PLAY: as many as the pro and time allows; depending on interest, at first we may limit it to once per person so everyone gets a chance at the pro - afterwards at the discretion of the Pro, he'll allow retries.

HOW LONG DOES THIS RUN: off and on throughout the day, as long as the PRO can go, or has money to offer :)

HOW MANY TIMES CAN I WIN - Once; no one will get rich; but bragging rights are way more sweet anyway.  Anyone that can best a Pro will have a photo taken with the Pro and officially touted as "THE BEST".

HOW ARE THESE GUYS "THE BEST"?
The Pro's for SSBB, SC4, and BB have attended 10 to 50+ events for their game, coming out on top in the state, and have won multiple tournaments for their games.  They may have rivals in the area, but at this event - they'll be the best there - or will they?  BRING YOUR A GAME.

(PPL has not had any recent tournaments; the Pro for this game has had outstanding runs online, and stepped up to own anyone that will try.)

First - What is OKgamers, and a Promotional Event
OKgamers.com, Oklahoma's only gamer resource for finding and promoting gaming events and local gamers to practice with.  An Oklahoma area resource for gamers, by gamers.  We also work with businesses that want to have gamer related events - we help them to help locals; it benefits us all.  This of course promotes OKgamers existence - thus any event OKgamers volunteers work with is a Promotional Event.

When OKgamers or a business wants to do events, we suggest only the active communities, and now favor ones with Community Leads as well.  When a business or sponsor wants to throw $$ into a tournament, we help them make the decision - based off active communities and recent tournaments and events.  If we work with a game, we need the "national rules", the established best rules for the game.  We'll need hardware; whether that comes from us, the community through their CL, or a combination.  And, of course, help promoting on the various core sites for the games we are including, as we like the hardcore to know about events.

Enter - Community Leads
A community lead is as simple as it sounds - a gamer who has stepped up as the leader of one or several local gaming communities OKgamers can go to and rely on to help us help them.

Are they on staff?  No, but are given perks, and are in the loop.
They only really 'volunteer' when we have questions, or during a tournament or Promotional Event, as they are the only non-volunteer that can access OKgamers' gaming brackets while we run an event, etc.  However, they do not officially volunteer outside of their own game, so in the pure since, nope.  They are just helping out their game get more traction in the local community.

And they do: getting their community $1,000's of dollars in attention and sponsorship at events each year; a chance to grow, not fade away.  Any game you've seen OKgamers work with in the last 6 years?  Has effectively had a Community Lead; helping us get the National rules, gather hardware, and get the word out.  We are now just officializing the title, and promoting the recruitment of more leads, and how your community can have their leader step forwards!

Your games community is MISSING OUT on potentially $1,000's of dollars every year in sponsorships, prizes and more.
Stop missing out; get a community lead, and get more events!!

List of existing Community Leads:
Blaz Blue - Tim "AnimeFreak" Barnes
Smash Brawl - Josh "ChuckNasty" Smith
Soul Calibur - Tim "AnimeFreak" Barnes
Super Street Fighter 4 AE - Tou "toucan108" Yang
Tekken - Nick "The Captian" Shufeldt

Call of Duty - MW3 - Ricky "Timmy Scorcher" McNeal of HxC
Gears of War 3 - Ricky "Timmy Scorcher" McNeal of HxC
Halo Reach - Ricky "Timmy Scorcher" McNeal of HxC

Starcraft 2 - Michael "Mickey" Williams

List of games we are looking for Leads:
League of Legends - PENDING current review...
UMvC 3 - NEEDED, if promotional events are to support it; after 2/25 it's apparent we must have one, or move to support just SF...
Smash Melee - NEEDED, if promotional events are to support it...

Console Racing Games
Console Sports Games

ANY AND ALL TABLETOP & ROLEPLAYING GAMES:
we know most games already have card shops, etc that are the center of their community.  When an event is of substantial size, or we can help out we bring in CCG, Tabletop and Larping.  We'd love to have a few more volunteers focused on these areas, but if nothing else - please consider becoming a community lead!

PC GAMERS - we've got Starcraft; if you know of local gamers that play consistently in the Oklahoma area, and would like to step up - let's do this!

--

Why so many console games?  Console gaming in Oklahoma has the least amount of support.
PC - has a few games worth it, but must have internet connectivity; limiting the options for events.
Tabletop & CCG have businesses already actively catering to them, and OKgamers is not in the business of duplicating or competing with the local community.  We work WITH you, not against.

Console gaming simply is the least served; so over the years we've worked with them the most.  PC has taken a turn for the rise.  And OKgamers is working with at least 2 conventions every year now; that means we bring more Tabletop & CCG into the loop as well.

Your game not on the list? Your community never get attention at a competitive event?  They go hand in hand, help us help you, be a CL :)

--

A Community Lead agrees to 3 duties:
  • Keep OKgamers up to date on their games' National Tournament rules and scene overall.
  • Keep active with local gamers and the scene; attend events, go to practices.  Be a regular, not a random.
  • Help OKgamers with Promotional Events that include their game; help set the initial event date, promote/re-post these events to their national scene via the National community website, and fill in on running brackets for their game(s) at a Promo Event if needed from a low volunteer turnout event, or to covering a bathroom break, etc.

What do these tasks really mean?  What would you do as a CL?

Communication on "Up to Date" - the literal answer:
 - For Rules, you post a thread in your games' Local Gamers Forum, and keep it up to date
 - On the scene overall you keep us up to date via a Facebook Group.  READ - you must have a Facebook Account as a result.

Keep Active with the scene - the literal answer:
 - Attend a majority of local events for your game, if at all possible; if not, keep up to date with those that did.  If your city has a local practice, be familiar with that.  It's just like it said - your a regular, not a 'unknown'.

Help OKgamers at a Promotional Event - the literal answer:
 - Initial Date - we post in the Facebook group about that date; you make sure we aren't double booking with your games events regionally
 - Brackets - we set them up; but we look to CL's and other travelling leaders to make sure we seed properly by skill and location.  Also, you may be asked to take over for 'breaks' - just clicking on who won on a screen, and calling the next match.
 - HARDWARE: if it's a promotional event, it may be potluck; we will come to you in the FB group and ask about "how much hardware can you help get there"; our Staff owns some hardware, but we do work with a games CL to make sure we get a base hardware collection for the game, else we cannot add it to an event.  So?  You ask around, find out who is down to bring what is needed from the local community or those attending, and let us know a final number "2 consoles and 3 disks", "4 setups", etc.

If you would like to nominate a community lead, please share this thread with them.

If you would like to be a Community Lead for your game please reply to this thread with:
  • Your name / Handle (if it differs from what you registered here for a forum account)
  • Game / Games you are requesting
  • City you live in
  • Cities you are willing to travel to
  • Time you've played the game
  • Average number of gamers you know locally that play your game
  • List of last few tournaments or events you've attended
  • We use both email, and Facebook; no question, simply put, you'll be asked for these later

We'll respond from there!  If you want to contact us privately, please use the Contact Form on the website; include those answers however.

FAQ's
- What if I want to be the lead for my community that already has one?
Approach the current lead and talk with them; are they needing help?  Looking to step down next year?  Find out what they need first.  Issues arise, etc - please PM me.

- CAN I SHARE THE RESPONSIBLITY?
Simply put, no.  We take our promotional events seriously; we provide purpose for 5+ states and local gamers to travel to; we don't have a habit of dropping the ball.  We do not work with a shared CL because at the end of the day - one person must be responsible.  2 people can shift responsibility between each other, drop communication internally or with us and never get anything doneFeel free to recruit help; gamers and people to help sharing community burdens, and obviously hardware support...  But one person must be the lead, the responsibility must be entrusted to one alone.

- Why did "THAT CL" get lead status?
They are active, meet the requirements, and/or were the first to step up and we accepted :)

- If just anyone can step up, doesn't that cause problems?
We do our best to vet any prospective CL's FIRST; the process can take days or weeks.  Just know, we care about Oklahoma gaming, and we won't take assignment of a CL lightly.

- What if my lead sucks?!
Submit a contact form through the main website.  Discuss the issues where your Lead has failed the community.  Give details.  Do not be vague; we want specifics.  We are an "open club" trying to improve Oklahoma; if someone is hurting the local community, we take it seriously.  However, publically bashing any member of the OKgamers crew, volunteer, staff or CL will hurt your case; take your frustration to form, let us know the issue, we will resolve it.

- WHY IS MY GAME NOT COVERED!!
We've never seen any of your local gamers?  We tried to support them and no lead stepped forward?  We didn't know you existed?  :)  Please either apply, or encourage your local group's most active member to consider doing this - it's how we can help you.  Help us help you, get us a lead!!

- Is it really that easy to get a tournament for my game? (Why do some say PENDING?)
It used to be REAL easy, just request a title; then we got tired of disappointing gamers by throwing unsuccessful tournaments. :)  Now, we work with a 'potential community lead' / new game title in a very specific way.  We try and include it at an event where it's not the MAIN attraction.  If they get attendance, we step it up, and add them at future events.  If they don't, we move on for then.  See "pending" on a Lead above?  They are going through that process, or just have began talking to us...

--

Our 6th Anniversary event taught us 2 things for sure; we can't let gamers sign up for whatever they want with 15+ tournaments happening, and we NEED to have a CL for any future Promotional Event game title.

That's it; we hope you join us in helping your games community and by extension, our Oklahoma community.

I know - the SF community has their thoughts, following Evo?
I know - MLG has their stats...

I know HxC has purchased a whole lot of the VH236H's by Asus...

...what is THE BEST monitor that EVERYONE agrees on?  (if that exists - if not, what do FPS and Fighters independently agree upon - any intel on PC gamers?)

Any issues to going with a monitor vs TV?  (what about SOUND!!)
Any reason to NOT go with the Asus VH236H?

Please take my questions seriously :)  This'll matter for years to come...
