Board Game Design Camp: 12-17 year-olds

May 29, 2018 By Isaiah Sharp Leave a Comment

Do you like playing board games? Have you ever tried to make your own? During this camp we’ll spend the first two days playing and analyzing games from tic-tac-toe all the way to Forbidden Island and Dixit. We’ll think and talk about how they work, why they’re fun, and what memory, math, language, and logical thinking skills we use to play them. Then we’ll each plan and make our own games using what we’ve learned. After we play-test each others’ games, we’ll invite friends and family to our game release party where they can enjoy the fruits of our labor.

About the instructor: Steve Gooch is a Montessori teacher in Oklahoma City. Before discovering his calling in early-childhood education, he spent ten years teaching literature and composition at OKCU and Purdue University. He’s taught adults and elementary students how to make games and will be presenting on teaching game design this summer at GenCon, the biggest tabletop-game convention in North America. He’s also given workshops on comics making in Oklahoma, Texas, and Indiana to groups of teachers at all levels, K-12 students, military veterans and their families, and cancer survivors. His comics include “Skip Schwartz and the Lost City Fireball,” the true tale of a meteorite that landed near Tahlequah, and the award-winning “How To Survive For a Week in a Dumpster. In Austin. In July.” His new game, “Alone,” will be released in early 2019.

Price: $200/camper. Scholarships available: please email us at [email protected]. Before and After Care available as well, 8am to 9am AND 4pm to 5:30pm.
